Mamie Patricia Norwood Lyde
September 25, 1946 ~ January 15, 2025 (age 78)
Mamie Patricia Norwood Lyde, affectionately known as “Pat,” passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025. Born on September 25, 1946, in New York City’s Lower East Side to Thelma and Joseph Ritter, Pat brought warmth, kindness, and joy to all who knew her.
Pat grew up with her older brother, Joseph Ritter, who preceded her in death, and her younger sister, Bernice King, with whom she shared a deep and close bond. She cherished the memories she shared with her younger brother, Michael Bracy.
For 32 years, Pat dedicated herself to the city of New York, retiring in 2013 after a remarkable career. At the young age of 23, she met the love of her life, Charles Lyde, in 1969. Their enduring partnership was solidified in marriage in 1997, a testament to their deep, unconditional love.
An avid traveler, Pat cherished her adventures, with her trip to Egypt being one of her most treasured memories. Faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she found immense joy in worship and service. She was an active member of New Star Baptist Church in Queens, NY, for 12 years, where she faithfully served as President of the Women’s Ministry, a member of the Board of Trustees, and a beloved singer in the church choir. Upon moving to Florida, she became a member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Sanford, FL, under the leadership of Pastor McKennon Fernander and continued her love of worship by singing in the choir.
Pat also enjoyed gardening, knitting, and most of all, shopping. She cherished spending time with her girlfriends and creating beautiful memories with her loved ones. Though she did not have biological children, Pat’s nurturing spirit made her a mother figure to many. She lovingly embraced Charles’ daughter, Wanda Phillips, as her own, becoming a cherished grandmother to Imani Forbes.
Pat’s compassion extended to her role as a devoted godmother to Titanya Verdun and Derick Ritter and a doting dog mom to her beloved Smokey, who remained by her side until her final day.
Pat faced her illness with grace, supported by her friends and family, including her cousins Zen Walton, Blaine Walton, and Beth Walton, as well as her Florida community, her church family, and her endearing friends. These loved ones gave care and support in a medley of ways—whether aiding in her care, sharing a meal, taking her for a walk, or accompanying her to Sunday service. Through it all, Pat was sustained by the unwavering devotion of her husband, Charles, who exemplified the true meaning of love in sickness and in health.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Charles Lyde; her daughter, Wanda Phillips (late Wayne Phillips); her granddaughter, Imani Forbes (Qadir Forbes); her great-granddaughters, Iva and Joi Forbes; her brother, Michael Bracy; her sister, Bernice King; her godchildren, Titanya Verdun and Derick Ritter; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and her loyal companion, Smokey.
Pat’s legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered.
