Violet Vern Derrick
July 9, 1957 ~ April 1, 2026
On this day, April 10, 2026, we’re here to celebrate VioletVern Derrick. She was a Mother, Sister, Auntie, Friend. Born in St. Kitts on July 9, 1957 to parents Nellie and Johnny Grant, she was one of their seven children. She leaves behind her daughter, Fedona, son-in-law, Raniq, granddaughter, Bliss, grandson who is soon to come, sisters, Prudence, Marlene, and Gale, brother, Lester, and dear friends.
She was known as Violet to most, but her family knew her as Vern. Vern was one of the hardest working people you could meet. To a fault, she was hard working. She had a tremendous sense of integrity, and even before she came to Christ, she always had a strong moral sense to do right by people. Not to lie, cheat or steal, she instilled these lessons in her daughter, Fedona. She was also incredibly determined, though some may have called her stubborn, the point is she rarely backed down from what she believed in. Those who knew her well, knew
she had a brief stint in dentistry, but her real passion and creativity laid in curating flavors. Many would tell you that she was the best chef that they knew. She mastered the art of cooking at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. This formal training
enabled her to run a catering business in St. Kitts, at times conjunctively with teaching culinary arts at a prestiged local college, all while working as a sous chef at a renowned hotel. She did all of this as a single mother raising her daughter. I told you she was a hard worker. Later in life, she transitioned away from the kitchen and into the bakery to work on desserts. She retired from SeaWorld Orlando in 2024 from her long held cake decorating position. Violet loved God and she aimed to let everyone know it, but even if she never told you directly, you could see that principle in her actions. She was compassionate and offered a helping hand to family, friends, and strangers alike. She found joy in novels and historical dramas, usually with a bowl of chocolate ice cream with all of the works next to her. She is definitely eating ice cream in heaven. May her soul rest eternally in peace.
